Gnomon means “the one who knows.”
Every day the sun moves across the sky. On its own that movement tells you nothing you can use — but a sundial, calibrated to its own latitude, turns it into the time. And time is how people planned the daylight they had: when to plant, when to travel, when to be finished. Angle the gnomon wrong and every reading is off. Not by much on any given day, but by more as the year goes on.
A household throws the same kind of shadow. Income, a business, property, equity, the people who depend on you: all of it moving, and none of it useful until something turns it into a position you can act on. That’s where Gnomon Tax can help. We calibrate yours, keep it calibrated as the year moves, and put the decisions in front of you early enough to be decisions.
Life, calibrated.What matters is timing
Most of what a tax firm does should feel almost invisible. The filings, the calculations, the compliance work — all of it matters, and none of it is where the value is created.
By the time a return is filed, most of the decisions that determined the result were made months earlier. At that point there is usually very little left to do except report what already happened.
We work before that moment.
When you are weighing a decision with tax attached, you should understand the cost before you make it, not the following April — with the numbers in front of you instead of guessing, hoping, and finding out later.
Done well, tax planning means you spend less time thinking about taxes, not more. The work happens through the year, so when a deadline arrives there should be very few surprises.
Mark Gallivan, CFP®, EA
I’m from Tipp City, Ohio, just north of Dayton. I grew up in the Midwest and I still work like it, and I think you’ll feel that in how we do things here.
What I didn’t grow up around was money, or any real sense of what to do with it. No budgeting, no habits, nobody sitting me down to explain any of it. I learned by making my own mistakes early, and then going and finding out how it was supposed to work.
That’s why so much of what we do is teaching. Someone who understands the choice in front of them makes a better decision than someone handed an answer, and most of the mistakes I’ve made, or watched other people make, were avoidable with better information a few months earlier.
So I built this firm around a plan that is dynamic, proactive and adaptable, because there is very little a client walks in with that can’t be worked out. Give someone a clear view of their options and the room to choose, and the situation stops being something that is happening to them. That’s peace of mind, and it’s why Gnomon Tax exists.
When I’m not working I’m with Adriana, my wife, and our three dogs: Tito, Winnie and Stewie. I don’t play enough golf to be any good at it, but I like the time on the course with friends.
The Gnomon Values
Not a statement on a wall. Every plan, update and review is checked against these before it reaches you, and you should be able to point at any one of them in what you receive.
Connection A relationship we keep building, not a file we keep updating.
The work that matters has always come from knowing the person, not the portfolio. Numbers describe a situation; they never explain what it’s for. Only the relationship does. And a relationship isn’t something you set up once, at the start. It either gets built on purpose, year after year, or it quietly turns into a file.
We look for reasons to talk rather than waiting for one, and every conversation opens with what has changed for you, not with what is due. Over years, that is what keeps the work anchored to the only thing it is actually about: you.
Reliability Saying what happens next, then doing it.
Anyone can be dependable in April. The harder kind is telling you what comes next and then doing it, every time, so that nothing about working with us has to be taken on faith. The process is built around you rather than around the calendar, which is what makes it something you can see into instead of something you wait on.
You always know what is being worked on, what is coming, and what it needs from you. When something is time-sensitive you hear about it then, not whenever the next update happened to be due. Nothing waits for you to chase it.
Curiosity Learn something new, then pass it on.
We teach financial planning to the next generation of planners, for a selfish reason: explaining something is how you find out whether you understand it. A firm built on that habit should leave its clients more capable, not more dependent. So you get the reasoning, not just the recommendation.
Every recommendation opens with the rule and why it works, not just the conclusion, so you can follow the reasoning and recognise the same situation the next time it comes around.
Creativity Bring us a problem worth solving.
This is problem-solving under conditions that keep moving. The law changes, the year changes, and everyone arrives with constraints that are not up for negotiation. Conventional thinking gets you the conventional answer, which is fine right up until the situation is not conventional. What looks like a hard problem is usually an opportunity nobody has turned over yet.
The service model is not a fixed menu. New services, new ways of working together, new specialists brought in when the answer needs someone else in the room: it changes as clients need it to. And when a situation is complicated enough that other firms would rather not take it on, you are in the right place.
Precision Getting the number right is the whole job.
Software will produce a return from whatever it is given. It will not notice that a basis is wrong, that a form is missing, or that last year’s preparer made an assumption nobody wrote down. Someone has to go through it line by line. Being interesting about strategy counts for nothing if the numbers underneath it are quietly wrong.
Every figure that reaches you has been checked by hand against its source, and where a number rests on an assumption, you get the assumption written down beside it.
Professional playfulness Serious about the subject. Never solemn about ourselves.
The people worth learning from hold both at once. Taxes may be the most mundane subject in American life, which makes them a fair test: if working with your tax firm isn’t at least a little enjoyable, something got lost along the way.
Plain language, no jargon, no false gravity. The subject is serious and your money is serious; the meeting does not have to be grim.
The people we bring in when the answer is not a tax answer
Tax planning runs into estate, insurance, lending and legal questions constantly. Rather than pretend otherwise, we keep a short list of specialists we have worked with directly and refer openly — no fee-sharing, no reciprocity arrangements.
When the plan needs documents — wills, trusts, powers of attorney — not just a strategy.
When a risk is better transferred than managed, and the product needs checking by someone who does not sell it.
When a purchase, refinance or exchange has to clear underwriting on a timeline.
When a position needs privilege, or a dispute has moved past representation.
When a 1031 exchange needs a QI in place before the property closes, not after.
When a property is large enough that an engineering study pays for itself.
When the work qualifies and the documentation has to hold up on examination.
When the business has outgrown its own reporting and needs someone owning the numbers.
When the portfolio needs running well enough that the tax treatment stays clean.
When you want portfolio management. We do not offer it, and we do not take a cut for the introduction.
We receive no compensation for any referral, and none of these relationships change what we recommend. If a specialist is not the right fit, say so and we will find another.
